Has Gamstop Been Successful?

UK - Apr 7, 2020 (PRN):

Gamstop found its first introduction into UK regulation in the middle of May in 2018 after initial struggles in late 2017 to get off the ground - and it had met a rocky start. The initiative was introduced as a self-inclusion method to help at-risk gamblers reduce their exposure to services that are offered, it was implemented following a huge surge in gambling addiction within the UK following the huge boom in mobile gaming - for it to work, however, it requires casinos to voluntarily register with the service.

The initial struggles had started once those who monitored the regulations discovered that even though someone had signed up with the service could no longer access the casinos on the list, they could still receive marketing materials from them. A small teething issue to be sure, but something that could be addressed - many casinos in the UK did opt-in prior to April of this year, but an ultimatum was put into place that those who did not volunteer to join the list could risk losing their gaming license if they did not self-register by March 31st of this year.

But with these steps being taken, the question remains, has the initiative been successful even with 99% of UK operators signed on to the program - just a year and a half following its release, the program has claimed that tens of thousands of users have already signed up to Gamstop but some have pointed out the huge flaws outside of the marketing issue that still surrounds it.

The first being that this does only impact operators that register within the UK, not all betting sites are on Gamstop and those that operate in countries such as Malta and Gibraltar are excluded from being involved, this means that at-risk gamblers who have registered with Gamstop are still able to access these services without restriction. There is also the option for those who self-register to remove themselves from the list - it does require them to phone up customer services and offer an explanation, but as it is self-inclusion the option is still there.

There are still some clear issues that need to be resolved with the program, but so far within the UK at least it has been able to get the majority of operators on board - the next step may be trying to push the initiative outside of the UK and have the independent companies get on board, but as the gaming laws in the countries, these other services operate of tending to be a little different a more consumer-focused, that may be a tougher task. The initiative is still young however and has a lot of room to grow, so we may see some fast and drastic changes that occur within the next year or two as the devise newer strategies to help reduce the ongoing problems that at-risk gamblers face.
