DaimlerChrysler Features Automatic Tire Inflation System On Jeep Grand Cherokee Concierge ![]() Cranberry Township, PA - June 18, 2002 (PRN): DaimlerChrysler has featured the automatic tire inflation and pressure maintenance system, called AutoPump, on its new concept vehicle, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Concierge. The Concierge was unveiled last week in Stuttgart, Germany. "The focus of the Concierge concept vehicle is safety and convenience. The AutoPump supports both of those goals by maintaining proper tire pressure for the driver," said Thomas Moore, Vice President and head of DaimlerChrysler's Liberty & Technical Affairs advanced technology research group. AutoPump continuously maintains tire pressure to the proper level, ensuring optimal inflation under different driving conditions and environments. The self-contained device is the size of a hockey puck, is mounted under the centrally located wheel ornament and is powered by the rotation of the wheel. A small tube connects the pump directly into the wheel rim to provide a direct airway into the tire. In 1997, this technology was first validated and commercialized for the severe environment of the heavy duty trucking industry and has since been tested and validated by various automobile manufacturers. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company also strongly supports those objectives through their ownership interest in Cycloid Company. These and the industry's other major firms recognize that, in addition to the safety benefits, proper tire inflation also extends tire life, increases fuel economy, improves braking performance, handling and speed rating.
