Sony Pictures Purchases Rights To Indian Pitchers’ Life Stories
Los Angeles, CA - Oct 29, 2009 (PRN):
Sony has acquired the rights to the life stories of Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, the two young Indian-born men from small villages who entered The Million Dollar Arm contest and placed first and second respectively after never hearing of the game of baseball. Both pitchers were signed to the Pittsburgh Pirates and have completed their first season of Rookie A-Ball with the Bradenton Pirates. Contest creator, JB Bernstein, who has served as an agent and guardian to the boys will also be portrayed in the motion picture scheduled to be released worldwide in summer 2011.
The producers attached to the project are Joe Roth (Roth Films, produced “Daddy Day Care,” “Mona Lisa Smile” and “Angels in the Outfield”) and Mark Ciardi (Mayhem Pictures, produced “Invincible,” “The Rookie” and “Miracle.”) The concept for the film was first developed by Neil and Michael Mandt (Mandt Bros Production – “The Jim Rome Show,” EMMYs and the ESPYs.)
“The rights fee was “extremely generous,” but more important to us is the team of people making the film that we believe can create the most authentic reproduction of these guys’ experiences for the audience,” said Bernstein.
Although the young Pittsburgh Pirates pitchers have a long road ahead of them to the Major Leagues, they both were able to make history this season with several statistical landmarks:
- 1st Indians born players to ever appear in a US pro baseball game
- 1st Indian born players to strikeout a batter
- 1st Indian born players to win a game
In addition, their story has been featured in almost every major news outlet around the world, making them by far the, two of the most publicized Indian athletes in US sports history.
